SEVNTNTH
("seh·vuhn·teenth" or "17th")
A childhood nickame (“Q”) flipped into something simply complex - “Q” is the 17th letter of the alphabet.
After getting cut from the high school basketball team, around 15 years old, SEV needed a new hobby to pick up before falling into pressures from his surrounding environment.
Being heavily tuned into BET & MTV music videos, a family friend encouraged him to download the fairly new FL Studio software (2006). Everyday after that, SEV proceeded to enhance his production, songwriting, and mixing abilities. By the next year, he was supplying the soundtrack for the basketball teams' season with his own mixtape.
In the summer of 2014, on break from college, SEV linked up with some creatives from his hometown (Trenton, NJ). The collective went on to form a powerhouse of artists and creatives called “Mad Lights.” Seasoned artist/songwriter Awegod (formerly Bub Luv) mentored young SEVNTNTH while working on his breakout independent album “Red Wine.” The collective also included BFreee, Bri Steves, Costa Vito, and Nahj. By early 2018, SEV released a double EP (DAZE/KNIGHTS) that served as the soundtrack to his first short film entitled “DAZE”.
The Trenton artist and producer now specializes in a sound that mixes hip hop, experimental soul, and new wave R&B. Some of his early influences ranged from Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Outkast, Michael Jackson, and Mary J. Blige. Studying these icons helped SEV develop a taste for bold messaging, infectious melodies, and innovative production. All of which are applied to his own sound today.
SEV is also the co-creator of a newly born indie music media company with Jo La Soul - Chroma Sounds. The rising imprint’s key components includes a monthly themed mix-show (*which highlights underground musical acts and artists) and an array of eclectic sonic events throughout New Jersey. SEVNTNTH is also the engineer of Play on Words Podcast hosted by Corein Carter (Forbes the Culture/Blavity).
